Reshoot for my current project. Marsha. Feral for 10 months on the Erith Marshes, London. Rescued 28th May 2012.
This photograph is from my current project ‘Death Row’, exploring the stories of animal welfare officer Niall Lester’s rescued dogs. Death Row is a term used in animal rescue when a dog has been deemed non re-homeable, for either their breed, a history of violence or simply having not found a home in time. The project revisits the locations in which Niall rescued each of his dogs, putting himself and the animal back in that situation once more. If not on Death Row already, Niall saved these dogs from the inevitability that they’d be on Death Row at some point in the future, either due to being in the hands of an abusive owner or from simply being unwanted.  Case #no.1: In the summer of 2011, a dog was spotted in the Erith Marshes running wild. After clarifying that she was a domestic, Staffordshire bull terrier living feral, it was assumed that she was either abandoned by her owner or had escaped from similarly unfortunate circumstances. She was terrified of people and unable to comprehend any humanly act of kindness. The only company she had on the marshes were the foxes she was spotted playing with, and horses that belonged to a nearby Gipsy farm. After many failed attempts at catching her, Niall and two of his friends decided to leave food for her everyday at the marshes, to at least keep her alive. They did this for months, gradually introducing the food in a caged dog trap in a last attempt at saving her. On the 28th May 2012, she was caught and taken back to the safety of Niall’s home, where he rehabilitated her and turned her life completely around. It is still not clear what happened to her and how she ended up on the marshes, but it is estimated that she was living feral for approximately 10 months. Her name is Marsha.
